Diversity and Inclusion Case Study: Cultural Change in a Mid-Sized Organization
Challenge: To construct a cultural change process that would improve employees’ understanding of diversity and its importance; build engagement at all organizational levels and create a greater climate of trust and inclusion.Solution: Designed, implemented and coordinated a comprehensive diversity plan based on a needs assessment and cultural climate survey. We provided consultation, team management and development to an internal workforce council and executives. Working with these internal partners, we created and delivered fully customized diversity education processes, programs and curricula for 2500 employees and managers across multiple departments and functions. Program content, schedules and formats were customized to match needs of diverse adult learners. Core programs were supported with other internal options; community partnerships were developed to leverage available resources and afford employees expanded opportunities to direct their own learning about specific, diversity-related topics. Internal policies and practices were reviewed and aligned with diversity goals. Internal and external communication processes were consistently implemented, including community briefings about progress.
Results: Diversity gained credibility and traction in an organization that had several previous, failed attempts to address multiple diversity challenges. Employees at all levels became more comfortable talking about previously challenging topics; different departments began “sponsoring” diversity programs and activities with the employee council. Diversity was integrated into a leadership initiative. The organization's public image and reputation improved.
